Real Skills Plus CAMHS Project Plan

Welcome to all individuals and teams who are interested in implementing the Real Skills Plus CAMHS competency framework.

Real Skills Plus CAMHS is a competency framework that describes the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that a practitioner needs in order to work with infants, children and young people that have moderate to severe mental health and/or alcohol or other drug (AoD) difficulties, their whanau and their community.

To support you with the introduction of Real Skills Plus CAMHS the following resources are available.
• Real Skills Plus CAMHS – A Competency Framework for Infant, Child and Youth Mental Health and Alcohol and other Drug Workforce (2009)
• Real Skills Plus CAMHS Training Compendium (2009)
• Individual Check List (Excel version)

>>Project Concept / Aim

This project builds on the previously contracted activity; the development and testing of specialist infant, child and youth mental health and AOD sector competencies (Real Skills Plus CAMHS) which were developed in alignment with Let’s get real.  The roll out of Real Skills Plus CAMHS enhances service provision to infants, children and young people with mental health and AOD concerns. It provides a framework for nationally consistent practice across the workforce and supports current government strategies such as Whanau Ora. The development of a training compendium complete with a suite of tools; and working alongside ICAMH/AOD services has supported the implementation process.  As with Let’s get real, there are significant training and HR processes required to ensure that Real Skills Plus CAMHS/AOD becomes embedded in CAMH/AOD practices. To date implementation has identified areas for training and development across ICAMH/AOD services.

A review of service delivery has identified workforces involved in ICAMH/AOD service provision who have not yet taken up the training. These include the primary health workforce and workforces within specialist ICAMH/AOD, for example Youth Addictions and Eating Disorders.

>> Objectives

  • To continue to support service providers and frontline clinicians with their implementation of Real Skills Plus CAMHS.
  • To collect data on the ICAMH/AOD services training needs identified during the implementation process and develop a strategy regarding delivery of relevant training.
  • To deliver the implementation in collaboration with the other Workforce Programmes.
  • To extend the Real Skills Plus CAMHS framework to include competencies relevant to both Primary and Specialist ICAMH/AOD workforces
  • To engage and support service providers and frontline clinicians working in the extended areas of service delivery to implement the extended areas of Real Skills Plus CAMHS.

>> Outputs

  • Continued working alongside ICAMHS/AOD services regarding roll out of Real Skills Plus ICAMHS/AOD to ensure services have been fully informed and encouraged to implement Real Skills Plus CAMHS by June 2012. Specific areas for Training and Development have been identified by services during the implementation of Real Skills Plus CAMHS and communicated to The Werry Centre.  The Werry Centre will support the services with the identification of the range of training and development opportunities that can then be accessed.
  • Engagement with two Primary Health services by June 2012 to test the extended competency framework.
  • Engagement with two Specialist ICAMH/AOD areas of service delivery to test the extended competence framework.
  • Collaboration with other Workforce Programmes.

>> Evaluation

The implementation phase of Real Skills Plus ICAMHS/AOD includes evaluation of the uptake, utility and applicability of the Implementation tools. To enhance a coordinated approach to project delivery and evaluation, data will be collected alongside evaluation activities being undertaken regarding other Werry Centre projects such as CAPA and the 7 Helpful Habits.

Feedback will be sought from services to test the extensions of the Real Skills Plus CAMHS framework
