The International Conference on Infant, Toddler and Early Childhood Mental Health will be hosted by The Werry Centre for Child & Adolescent Mental Health at the University of Auckland in partnership with The Brown Center for the Study of Children at Risk at Brown University, Rhode Island. The conference will be held at the University of Auckland Business School from February 18-20th 2010.

Invited international experts in the field of Infant Mental Health will present cutting edge research, and clinicians will present on the implementation of research in practice.

Research over the past 30 years has transformed our knowledge about how infants and young children develop and the effects of early experiences on developmental outcomes and infant mental health. Research has also shown that despite early adverse events or experiences, well-designed early interventions can minimize the impact of these experiences.

Our Infant, Toddler and Early Childhood Mental Health Conference will bring together leading international experts from the US, Israel, Australia, and the UK who will present the latest research on the effective treatment of early relationship disorders, preterm birth, early conduct problems and autistic spectrum disorder. A further feature of our conference will be a special session on Maori and Pacific Models of early social and emotional development, and a session that will explore the development of services in New Zealand to provide treatment for this vulnerable group of New Zealand children.

The Honourable Tariana Turia, Minister of Maori Affairs, Community and Voluntary Sector and Associate Minister of Health, Social Development and Employment, opens the Infant Mental Health Conference on Thursday 18th February 2010.

The Conference will attract international and national academic and clinical delegates from a range of professions; General Practice, Child Psychiatry, Developmental Psychology, Midwifery, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Neonatology and Early Education. Delegates will come from Australasia, the USA and Europe as well as from throughout New Zealand.

300-400 delegates are expected to attend the conference over three days. Social events include a Welcome Reception following the Powhiri at Waipapa Marae, an evening where researchers attending the conference present posters of their work, and a Conference Barbeque at the Fale on the University of Auckland’s Main Campus.
