The Werry Centre's Progress
(last updated March 2011)
The Werry Centre’s activity to date has been highly successful in training clinicians in the Basic Parenting Programme. The current number of trained Basic Parenting group leaders in New Zealand is 698. Of those trained 98 identify themselves as Maori.
In 2004 a cohort of 90 clinicians across New Zealand received the 3 Day Basic Parent Training in Incredible Years. From this pool of 90 clinicians, 8 were selected to represent their agencies to undergo further training and become Accredited in the Basic Programme with the long term aim of becoming Incredible Years mentors. Ingrid Altena was employed as Project Manager in October 2005 to develop processes to lead this group of Accreditees and progress the development of Incredible Years and its sustainability in New Zealand.
Carolyn Webster-Stratton was invited to New Zealand in March 2006 to provide our trainees with Consultation to springboard the group towards Accreditation and then mentorship. Webster-Stratton advised us that our group reaching Accreditation within a twelve month time frame was ambitious. Carolyn Webster-Stratton has meticulously high standards for reviewing tapes. Seven of this initial group successfully completed their Accreditation process.
The recent initiative of training Acrredited Groups Leaders as Peer Coaches has meant a greater level of support and efficiency for those working towards Accreditation. Our current process involves every group leader working towards Accreditation via the Werry Centre has access to a Peer Coach. The coaches closely supervise the group leaders and review their taped work to provide initial feedback and direction in their facilitation skills. This will ensure a higher number of DVDs meeting the standards for fidelity in delivery once they are sent on for formal review.
In New Zealand currently we have a pool of 26 Accredited group leaders, 3 mentors (Dianne Lees, Lesley Stanley & Tania Anstiss). Having mentors available in New Zealand has meant Basic Training Programmes are able to be delievered in New Zealand, reducing the relieance on trainers from overseas. There are currently 4 Accredited Peer Coaches and 2 mentors available in New Zealand actively supervising group leaders working towards Accreditation.
Applications from 25 group leaders have been accepted for our 2011 cohort clinicians receiving support towards Accreditation via the Werry Centre. This group includes 4 Maori and 3 Pacific. The Werry Centre has provided an annual intake for professionals working towards Accreditation over a 12 month period. In 2011 an additional intak for Accreditation is scheduled for the second half of the year. This will coincide with Peer Coach training to provide Education funded NGO's acces to the Werry Centre's supported accreditation pathway. Every clinician develops their skill levels at their own pace and due to such high and stringent criteria this can take longer than the twelve month time frame..
Supervision - Whenever a 3 Day Basic training is offered in New Zealand by The Werry Centre, Supervision days are factored into the follow up within six months of the training. The Werry Centre have held 27 Supervision Days across the country to date with numerous dates scheduled for 2011.
Accredited Leaders Workshops - The Werry Centre have provided workshop and peer supervision opportunities to develop leadership skills for the Incredible Years group leaders steadily working towards mentoring in Incredible Years. These workshops have been held annually since 2006.
In February 2009 the Werry Centre’s annual Accredited Group leaders workshop included Peer coach training by Carolyn Webster-Stratton. Group leaders also received an additional consultation of their group leadership skills by Carolyn during the 3 day event. The Werry Centre is planning another Peer coach training in July 2011.
This high level of Supervision provision has been a key in the ongoing development of potential peer coaches and mentors across each region as well as to ensure that the integrity of the programme is maintained.
Consultations Days - The Werry Centre have held Consultation days regularly across the country. Attendance at a Consultation day is one of the pre requistes for group leaders working towards their Accreditation.
Peer Coaching – The Werry Centre has provided training to a pool of motivated Accredited clinicians providing Peer Coaching in New Zealand. There is currently a pool of 4 Peer Coaches in New Zealand. Four of these Peer Coaches, (Ingrid Altena, Tania Anstiss, Lesley Stanley and Diana Linforth-Howden) are fully Accredited. This is a significant achievement as internationally there are only five fully Accredited Peer Coaches, two of whom reside in Auckland. The Peer coaches, alongside the mentors, provide coaching and Supervision for group leaders working towards Accreditation in the Incredible Years parenting programme.
Mentor Development - Dianne Lees is our first New Zealand mentor. The Werry Centre fully funded her to participate in the mentor training in Seattle in October 2007 and the following year in Italy in October 2008. For all mentors, the expectation is for attendance at a mentor workshop once every 2 years. The minimum requirement for mentors is to attend a mentor training every five years. Tania Anstiss attended the September 2010 mentor training in Copenhagen where she was awarded her mentor status.
Agency Progress - All of the 21 DHB’s across New Zealand have now had access to training and most of the regions (19) are delivering the programme. Progress is currently underway to ensure inclusion on Incredible Years by the remaining DHBs. The training by the Werry Centre has been delivered across several agencies with good representation from health, education and NGO’s now delivering programmes across the regions.
Regular Peer Supervision workshops have been held across the country, resulting in interagency links, collaborative groups forming and peer supervision groups increasing the likelihood of fidelity to the programme and ongoing learning opportunities.
The Project aims are to continue to provide further Basic Training, Supervision, Consultation and opportunities for advancement via Accreditation, Peer Coaching and Mentor development.
