Incredible Years Parent Group Leader Progression

Incredible Years Parent Group Leader Progression

Incredible Years Basic Training
The first step to deliver Incredible Years parenting groups is to attend a 3 day training. This provides group leaders with the skills required to facilitate Incredible Years groups to parents.

Supervision
Informal supervision is delivered in a variety of ways based on the preferences and needs of the agencies and regions. The Werry Centre recommends Accredited group leaders providing Supervision within their agencies. Mentors and Peer coaches regularly participate in and deliver supervision within their regions. The Werry Centre provides a follow up Supervision Day within six months of every Basic Training programme they deliver.

Consultation Day
A Consultation Day is a formal one to two days training workshop involving clinicians bringing videotaped samples of their work for peer evaluation. This is one of the requirements prior to achieving Accreditation.

Accredited Group Leader
Accreditation requires a further 1 – 2 days training (Consult Day), peer supervision and submission of materials including all of the evaluations (weekly and final questionnaire) from a minimum of two groups. Videotaped sessions of group delivery are submitted for assessment and approval reaching Incredible Years standards. The average on pass rates for new group leaders of tapes is 10% as the criteria is very high. An Accredited group leader can supervise new group leaders and ensures a high level of fidelity of programme delivery within the agency.

Peer Coach
This is a relatively new step in Incredible Years requiring experienced (a minimum of 6 groups) and Accredited group leaders to attend 2 one day trainings, submit evaluations from clinicians they are actively supervising (a minimum of 4 cohorts) and provide taped sessions of their coaching for assessment. Peer Coaches are able to provide supervision and review tapes of clinicians wishing to apply for Accreditation. This significantly increases the number of tapes submitted to Incredible Years that achieve the high standards required to reach Accreditation. Six of the Werry Centre’s initial group of Accredited group leaders have been trained and provide Peer Coaching across New Zealand.

Mentor
In New Zealand we currently have one mentor who resides in the Bay of Plenty region. Our goal at the Werry Centre is to support additional experienced group leaders to work towards mentor status with the eventual result of each major region across New Zealand having access to their own mentor. A long term goal of having a Maori mentor is also being actively pursued. A mentor can only be invited to participate in the mentor training programme by Carolyn Webster-Stratton based on careful assessment of their work. They need to have achieved a standard of excellence in their own group delivery, a minimum of 5 years delivery experience. A mentor requires additional ongoing training and workshops are available in the States and in Europe annually. Mentors are recommended to attend these once every two years. A mentor can only provide training for programmes they themselves have been Accredited in ie each programme; Baby, Basic Parenting, School Aged Parenting, Dinosaur, Teacher and Advanced each have their own Accreditation processes to follow.

Trainer
Internationally there are only 9 trainers selected by and including Carolyn Webster-Stratton who are able to deliver Incredible Years Basic Training worldwide and develop and train potential mentors.
