Child, Adolescent and Family ServicesThe Child, Adolescent and Family Service (CAFS) is a community based secondary mental health service for young people and their families who are having emotional, behavioural, developmental or relationship difficulties. CAFS comprises two separate services: the Child Specialty Service (0-12 years) and the Youth Specialty Service (13 years -20th birthday) to better target the specific mental health needs of each age group. The service is funded by the District Health Board and is free to consumers.
Child Specialty Service

Child Specialty Service (CSS) covers the whole of the Hutt Valley, Wainuiomata and Eastbourne. |
| Eligibility of Service: |
Child Specialty Service (CSS) 0 – 12 years: Assessment and treatment for children and their families with moderate to severe mental health issues. This work is undertaken in the context of the family and family therapy is the primary mode of treatment. Therapy may include family assessment, psychiatric, psychological and child psychotherapy assessments. Carer Relief needs assessment – Assessment and, when appropriate, funding may be provided for young people with a mental health diagnosis whose parents/caregivers need planned short-term carer relief. This may be arranged within the extended family or through Barnardos, Open Home Foundation or other community agencies. |

Referrals to these multi-disciplinary teams can be made via our intake co-ordinator by general practitioners, health professionals, school guidance counsellors, community groups and young people and families can self refer. |

Youth Specialty Service
| Geographic Area: |
Youth Specialty Service (YSS) covers the whole of the Hutt Valley, Wainuiomata and Eastbourne. |
| Eligibility of Service: |
Youth Specialty Service (YSS) 13 years — 20th Birthday: Assessment and treatment for adolescents individually and in the context of their family/social network when their mental health issues are having a moderate to severe impact on their daily functioning. Therapy may include family assessment, alcohol and drug, psychiatric and psychological assessments. |

Intensive Clinical Support Services (Capital & Coast, Wairarapa and Hutt)
| Geographic Area: |
The Intensive Clinical Service (ICS) is a regional service and covers the greater Wellington area including Kapiti up to Peka Peka through to wairarapa and up to Mt Bruce. |
| Service Provided: |
ICS is based in the Hutt Valley (Nikau Centre). It is a service to help young people up to age 17 years who have a serious and complex mental health problem requiring very intensive interventions and who are current clients of both mental health services and Child, Youth and Family Service. The ICS philosophy is to have low caseloads and work intensively with the young person and his or her family focusing on engaging clients be being strengths focused, providing flexible hours and seeing the clients on their own environment. The ICS also manage a "wrap-around" budget for packages of care for clients of the service. This funding is used to purchase services which cannot be funded from any other source. |
| Referral Process: |
Referrals are discussed and prioritised at a monthly Regional Reference Group involving CYFS, MHS and SES. Referrals must be made jointly by CYFS and Mental Health Services. |
