What is Real Skills Plus CAMHS?
Real Skills Plus CAMHS is a 2-level specialist competency framework describing the knowledge and skills that a practitioner needs to work with infants, children and young people who have moderate to severe mental health and/or alcohol or other drug (AoD) difficulties, their whānau and their community. The Ministry of Health has developed a knowledge, skills and attitudes framework for people working in mental health and addictions: Let’s get real: Real skills for people working in mental health and addictions. It is intended that this framework be adopted by the DHB and NGO workforce, working with people experiencing mental health and addiction concerns, by 2011 (see www.moh.govt.nz/letsgetreal ). The Let’s get real framework describes three levels: Essential, Practitioner and Leader. The framework provides a foundation for all of the competency frameworks relevant to people working in the mental health and addictions sector. The Real Skills Plus CAMHS competency framework is an adjunct to the Let’s get real framework. Real Skills Plus CAMHS will support individuals and teams to deliver specialist competency based services. It will also support education providers to deliver competency based training. This will support positive outcomes for infants, children, young people and their whānau who have contact with mental health and/or AoD services. .

Implementation
The project team are currently developing a suite of tools to support CAMH/AoD services to implement Real Skills Plus CAMHS. The Real Skills Plus CAMHS project team aim:
· To engage with service providers to support their implementation of Real Skills Plus CAMHS. The process will commence with the identification of two pilot DHB sites by early 2009. The project team will then work with identified ‘drivers’ within the services to support the implementation process.
· To identify CAMH/AoD services training needs and develop a training plan to inform the National Mental Health Training Plan.
· To engage with Post-Graduate Child and Youth Mental Health Certificate and Post-Graduate Diploma Education Providers to ensure their programme content and Real Skills Plus CAMHS are aligned.
· To remain closely aligned with the implementation of the Let’s get real competency framework.
