The Pacific Children & Adolescent Mental Health (CAMH) and Alcohol & other Drug (AoD) Clinicians and Workers Fono (2009)

The Werry centre for Child & Adolescent Mental Health Workforce Development recently hosted the 4th national Fono for Pacific Clinicians and Workers.

Presentations from the day are listed below.

The theme of this year’s Fono was LEVEKI nurturing pacific children, youth, families and communities. With more than 70 attendees the fono was an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our Pacific workforce, to hear some of the challenges that are faced and begin a discussion of how to continue to grow both the workforce and services.

Keynote presentations by Dr Api Talemitoga, Chief Advisor Pacific Health (Ministry of Health) and Dr Siale Foliaki, Consultant Psychiatrist from Vaka Toa & Faleola (Counties Manukau DHB) provided an inspiring and enlightening start to the sessions. Masterfully led by MC Epati Fale the day continued with thought provoking presentations from Mercy Drummond and Dr Alistair Bush from Health Pasifica CAFS Team (Capital & Coast DHB), Joanne Roberts, Vaka Toa Whirinaki (Counties Manukau DHB), Epenesa Olo-Whaanga, Kari Centre (Auckland District Health Board), and Mark Esekielu, Pacific Trust (Canterbury). Jo Gray and her team from Tupu (Waitemata DHB) provided a vibrant illustration of how their service has successfully engaged Pacific youth with AoD issues. Dr Monique Faleafa (LeVa) spoke about key workforce initiatives for workforce and Mali Erick (The Werry Centre) provided an overview of the current Pacifc CAMH/AoD workforce and service.

There was an overwhelmingly positive response from attendees with comments indicating that the fono was enjoyable and thoroughly informative. One participant described the day as “inspiring and lifting the passion.... the presentations reveal our uniqueness, similarities, and our passion for our people”.
